So, why is Merimbula just the Bee's Knees for Stand Up Paddle
I thought I would use this catchy little expression in the title to describe stand up paddle boarding in Merimbula, then I thought, "I wonder where that term came from?" When I googled the definition, it states, that due to the fact that bees move from flower to flower gathering nectar, they are always standing in the nectar which means their knees are always covered in the sweet, good stuff. When I read this, I thought, Ah Ha! That's the perfect expression to describe SUP in Merimbula! Merimbula is jam packed with the sweet, good stuff when it comes to stand up paddle boarding!
I'm sure you have all seen the amazing aerial shots of the Merimbula Lake which show the incredible crystal clear waters of the area. When you see one of these shots it's pretty easy to understand why the far south coast is called the Sapphire Coast, isn't it. Well, when you stand on top of the Sapphire waters of Merimbula on a SUP, it is even more amazing! As I write this, I'll pop in some pictures of some of the stunning scenery and clear waters we have experienced during our sessions, so, here's the first one.

On the majority of days, the water is incredibly clear. When you combine this with a totally wind free morning where there is zero disturbance on the water, it can almost feel like you and your SUP board are just suspended in mid air! This is especially the case when the pristine waters of the Merimbula Bay flood into the Lake on a rising tide.
Merimbula Lake has so much to offer the adventurous stand up paddle boarder! There are three main sections in the Merimbula Lake. There is, what I call the town lake or front lake, which runs from the ocean to the car bridge. Then there is the top lake, which is a very large body of water right at the upper reaches of this amazing estuary. In between these two sections of the lake, from the car bridge to top lake, there is another beautiful body of water which is quite shallow, so is best paddled on high tide. The Merimbula Lake is a tidal estuary which means it is open to the ocean. This means it is affected by the movement of the tides. During certain phases of the moon e.g. a full moon, the tides can be very big (producing a lot of water movement) which last about a week. During these periods we adjust our sessions to allow for these big tidal movements. This is when we do, what we call the Ride The Tide session!
(The picture above is a ride the tide session from town lake to top lake). In this session we all just stand back and let the tide take us on a magical mystery tour, all the way from the town lake to top lake or vise versa depending on the tidal direction. Just imagine yourself totally relaxed, just standing there chilling, watching the fish pass under your board as you get gently pushed along by the tide through the gorgeous town of Merimbula. Just another reason to jump on a stand up paddle board whilst you are in Merimbula! Let me show you some pics of each section of the lake. Let's start with the Town Lake.

OK! Let's take a look at the Merimbula Top Lake!
Now let's take a look at the section that divides the two main lakes (Town Lake and Top Lake). As I said, this section is a large body of water and is quite shallow. On low tide, a lot of this section is too shallow to paddle even on a stand up paddle board. The main boating channel that weaves it's way down through the centre of the oyster leases in this section, always has plenty of water for paddle boarding even on low tide. But it's on high tide when this section really comes to life! There is so much to explore in here, that's if you are with a person who knows the area and knows the right time to take you! Here's a couple of pics!
Get ready! My Merimbula story is about to get even better! Due to the unbelievably good water quality the Merimbula Estuary possesses, it is inhabited by an abundance of sea life. On your tour you are very likely to see (even paddle over) the incredible, very large stingrays that inhabit this system. You will also see an abundance of fish species, a myriad of bird life and you may even stumble across the resident seal Sammy! On just a couple of occasions, I have even paddled with some very friendly dolphins in the town lake. It is a very special occasion indeed when a dolphin pops up along side you and gives you a smile! The Merimbula Lake is a very exciting place. New amazing things just keep on appearing! I have spent hours and hours on this lake and every time it surprises me with something new! Check out some of these amazing pics taken during our sessions.
OK, so there's a little bit of information about stand up paddle boarding on the Merimbula Lake. But that was only a little taste of what's on offer! We also have the beautiful Merimbula Bay and we must not forget the mysterious Pambula River, which we also tour on very special occasions. If you feel like a bit of a drive, Eden definitely has plenty to offer the budding paddle boarder! I am sure you are also aware, SUP surfing in Merimbula is red hot! I look forward to sharing all of this and much more with you during one of our sessions!
See you soon,
Steve.
