Early mornings on the Merimbula Lake are just picture perfect. Check out the image below! To get the most out of your stand up paddle experience you need to hit the water nice and early. Don't hit the snooze button, get out of bed and get on the water! The old saying, the early bird catches the worm definitely applies to stand up paddle.
I hit the water this morning before sunrise to do a bit of fitness training. The conditions were immaculate with not a ripple on the water. There was about a 2m high mist across the surface of the water at Top Lake and I was joined by a couple of very friendly dolphins!

Spring really is an amazing time in Merimbula! This morning the sun was shining on the crystal clear waters of the lake which created spectacular under water viewing. The beams of sunlight streaming under the bridge allowed me to take the great shot which shows how clear the water is at the moment. The really great news is the water is slowly but surely warming up! Here it comes! Another summer of stand up paddle perfection in Merimbula.

With the stand-up paddle season fast approaching, I have a little story about my SUP session on the Pambula River yesterday morning that may get you inspired to try this amazing sport. As you can see in the image below, the water was like a sheet of glass and crystal clear. As I paddled up river I noticed something large break the surface of the water about 50 metres in front of me. On closer inspection I discovered that it was two dolphins! I was on my 12'6" race board so I was travelling quite fast in these perfect conditions but I just could not catch them. They appeared to be having a ball, I did notice that a couple of times they threw some decent sized fish in the air, so I guessed they must be chasing a school. Finally they slowed down and I caught up to them. As the tide was quite low, the water was shallow, and with out any disturbance on the water at all, it was like looking through a window. Then they appeared darting around checking me out. I just stood there amazed at how clearly I could see them. They were super fast and incredibly agile. They started to circle around me so I thought I would join in their game and paddle around in a circle with them. I definitely felt like the uncoordinated kid struggling around on my big board and they moved with such ease, flying around sort of on their side looking at me and then they would shoot up and break the surface every now and then. We did a couple of circuits and then they disappeared from sight. I continued on up river in a kind of a daze. How many people are lucky enough to experience that on a lazy Friday morning. Truly special, Truly spoilt!
